It amazes me every time I see one of these article - it's been widely accepted for years now that exercise is as good as or even better than any of the antidepressants for mild to moderate depression. Yet each time a new study comes out reconfirming this knowledge, the media act as is it's all new information.

We know that aerobic exercise is better than resistance training for this effect (but we can get the same benefit from resistance training by doing circuit work or more cardiovascular types of training) and that both exercise and antidepressants stimulate neurogenesis (the creation of new brain neurons) which serves to alleviate depressive symptoms over time.
